The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) held its third quarter integrated solid waste management meeting today at the Mayor’s Office conference room, with MENRO chief Mr. Florencio Reberta, Jr. presenting updates on the municipality’s waste management efforts.

Reberta discussed ongoing activities at the closed dumpsite in Brgy. Sua, including regular clearing, tree planting, and continuous monitoring.

The meeting further focused on the need to update the 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP), aligning it with improvements in waste collection, facilities, equipment, and interventions. According to Reberta, he will submit a development plan that includes increased waste collection rates, improved facilities and equipment, and a strengthened Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign in barangays and schools.

MENRO also shared several key initiatives, including the issuance of a notice of violation to a local piggery for improper waste disposal. The office will collaborate with other agencies to provide training on hog-raising practices, including proper waste disposal. MENRO also inspected a junkshop that was using a simple septic tank for wastewater disposal, lacking proper compartmentalization. The office encouraged the shop to apply for an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) and implement proper wastewater disposal methods.

The meeting also highlighted ongoing community and river clean-up drives and a “Palit Basura” program, where residents can exchange waste for groceries.
